Di dove sei e cosa hai studiato?
Prima di tutto, grazie per questa opportunità. Per me è sempre un piacere e un onore condividere la mia passione con gli AFOL e gli appassionati. Mi chiamo Andrea Lattanzio, conosciuto come Norton 74 nella community AFOL, ho 50 anni e vivo a Milano con mia moglie spagnola e i miei due figli. Ho una laurea in economia aziendale
Di cosa ti occupi?
Sono responsabile della raccolta fondi aziendale per un'importante organizzazione no-profit italiana
Cosa ti ha spinto a diventare un costruttore LEGO?
La possibilità di esprimere la mia creatività mi ha spinto a diventare un costruttore LEGO. Per me LEGO è un mezzo per realizzare le mie idee. È come suonare uno strumento musicale o dipingere un quadro; costruire può essere considerato una forma d'arte. Negli ultimi dieci anni LEGO ha significato molto per me ed è ormai parte integrante della mia vita
Da dove trai ispirazione per le tue creazioni?
Trovo ispirazione in ciò che mi circonda quando viaggio o semplicemente quando passeggio per la mia città. Se trovo qualcosa che mi colpisce, cerco di ricostruirlo con i mattoncini LEGO. Traggo ispirazione anche dal mondo della letteratura, del cinema, della cultura pop e, in generale, da tutto ciò che mi circonda e che mi trasmette qualcosa di positivo
Qual è la tua creazione LEGO preferita tra quelle che hai realizzato finora?
La risposta è semplice: la Casetta a forma di A, ovviamente. Più in generale, la mia serie di case rurali che ho costruito dal 2018 al 2022 è attualmente la mia preferita. Mi piacciono molto i soggetti, la palette di colori, le tecniche, l'utilizzo dei pezzi, le atmosfere e la fotografia di questo tipo di MOC. Rappresentano perfettamente il mio stile, sviluppato in quasi 15 anni di carriera come costruttore. Ma amo molto anche il Magic Bus del film Into the Wild, che ho costruito all'inizio del 2020. E non posso dimenticare il mio Garage Volkswagen, perché è stata la MOC che mi ha permesso di far conoscere il mio lavoro nella comunità LEGO e ha contribuito a consolidare la mia reputazione a livello mondiale
Qual è stata la sfida più complessa che hai affrontato come costruttore LEGO?
La parte più difficile nella progettazione di MOC è individuare le giuste proporzioni. A volte devo provare tre o quattro volte prima di trovare la dimensione corretta ed equilibrata. Anche la combinazione di colori rappresenta una scelta difficile e a volte richiede molti tentativi prima di raggiungere la combinazione cromatica giusta. Posso dire di aver sempre risolto i problemi relativi al processo di progettazione, nessuna delle mie MOC è mai stata incompleta.
Ma la sfida più grande è mantenere alto il livello delle mie MOC. Il mio obiettivo era, ed è, quello di migliorare costantemente le mie opere. A un certo punto, salire ulteriormente diventa difficile, molto difficile
Hai una tecnica preferita o un metodo particolare che utilizzi nelle tue costruzioni?
C'è una tecnica che contraddistingue il mio lavoro e rappresenta il mio "marchio di fabbrica": è la tecnica di non premere completamente le tessere sulle piastre per creare un effetto vintage usurato. È talmente la mia firma che i designer LEGO che hanno sviluppato il set A-Frame Cabin hanno cercato di ricreare questo effetto con tecniche legali, e ci sono riusciti!
Quali temi o soggetti ti piace esplorare maggiormente nelle tue creazioni? Da quando ho iniziato a costruire MOC, ormai più di 15 anni fa, ho regolarmente cambiato i soggetti delle mie creazioni. Ho iniziato con officine e hot rod, ma negli ultimi anni mi sono dedicato alla costruzione di case rustiche e non convenzionali, come case su palafitte e baite in generale
Qual è il progetto più grande o più ambizioso che tu abbia mai realizzato?
Senza dubbio l'obiettivo più ambizioso che ho raggiunto è stato trasformare una delle mie opere in un set LEGO ufficiale, tramite LEGO IDEAS
Quale consiglio daresti a chi vuole diventare un esperto costruttore LEGO?
Segui la tua passione, divertiti e costruisci qualcosa che ti piace. Consiglio anche di costruire principalmente con mattoncini fisici e di provare a scattare delle belle foto
Where are you from and what did you study?
First of all, thank you for this opportunity, for me it is always a pleasure, and an honor, sharing my passion with AFOLs and enthusiasts. My name is Andrea Lattanzio, aka Norton 74 in the AFOL community, I'm 50 and I live in Milan, Italy, with my Spanish wife and two children. I have a degree in business economics
What do you do, what job do you do now?
I'm the corporate fundraiser for an important Italian Non-Profit Organization
What inspired you to become a LEGO builder?
The possibility to express my creativity pushed me to become a LEGO builder. To me LEGO is a medium to realize my ideas. It's like playing music or painting a picture; building can sometimes be considered as an art form. Over the past decade LEGO has meant a lot to me and It's definitively part of my life now
Where do you get inspiration for your creations?
I get inspired by what is around me when I travel or simply when I walk around my city. If I find something that strikes me then I try to rebuild it with LEGO bricks. I also take inspiration from the world of literature, movies, pop culture and in general from everything I see around and that transmits something positive to me
What is your favorite LEGO work that you have built so far?
The answer is simple, the A-Frame Cabin of course. More generally my series of rural houses that I have built from 2018 to 2022 are my favorite ones now. I really like the subjects, the color palette, the techniques, the parts usage, the atmospheres and the photography of this kind of MOCs. They perfectly represents my style developed almost 15 years career as a builder. But I also really love the Magic Bus from the movie Into the Wild that I built in early 2020. And I can't forget also my Volkswagen Garage as it was the MOC that helped me to make my work noticed in LEGO community and boosted my reputation worldwide
What has been the most complex challenge you have faced as a LEGO builder?
The hardest part of designing MOCs is identifying the right proportions. Sometimes I have to try three or four times before I find the correct and balanced size. Even the color combination represents a difficult choice and sometimes it requires many attempts before reaching the right color combo. I can say that I have always solved the problems concerning the design process, none of my MOCs have ever been incomplete.
But the biggest challenge is to keep the level of my MOCs high. My goal was, and is, to always improve my works. At a certain point, going up further is hard, very hard
Do you have a favorite technique or a special method that you use in your constructions?
There is a technique that distinguishes my work and it represents my "trademark"; it is the technique of not completely pressing the tiles on the plates to create the worn vintage effect. It is so much my signature that the LEGO designers who developed the A-Frame Cabin set tried to recreate this effect with legal techniques, and they did it!
What themes or subjects do you like to explore the most in your creations?
Since I started building MOCs, now more than 15 years ago, I have regularly changed the subjects of my creations. I started with workshops and hot-rods but in recent years I have dedicated myself to building rustic and unconventional homes, such as stilt houses and cabins in general
What is the largest or most ambitious project you have ever made?
Without a doubt the most ambitious goal I have achieved was to transform one of my works into an official LEGO set, through LEGO IDEAS
What advice would you give to someone who wants to become an expert LEGO builder?
Follow your passion, enjoy yourself and build something you like. I also recommend building mainly with physical bricks and try to take some nice photos
