MEET THE MAKER: THE BUILDER BEHIND THE VISION
31st episode: 🇫🇷 LIONEL MARTIN a.k.a CASTOR TROY
Ho iniziato a creare le mie città già all'età di sette anni. All'epoca giocavo con LEGO City e Classic Space.
Il mio personale trittico è composto da The Vampire Castle, The Vampire Hunters' Lair e Paris Steampunk 1889.
Quali temi o soggetti ti piace maggiormente esplorare nelle tue creazioni?
Where are you from and what did you study?
I am French, I live in the center of France near Nevers. I have done some scientific studies but I am more of an autodidact
What do you do, what job do you do now?
I'm in IT but like Chandler on Friends, no one really knows what job I do, even me
What inspired you to become a LEGO builder?
I made my own cities from the age of 7. I was already playing with City and classic space. At 30, it was by discovering the evolution of colors that I felt new inspirations
Where do you get inspiration for your creations?
I am a very big fan of everything that is done. I spend almost an hour a day looking at other creations. I am an "absorber" of creations and techniques. I am not an "innovator". In music I will be Lenny Kravitz but I would prefer to be Prince. Otherwise I am a big fan of comics which are my greatest source of inspiration.
My favorites Lego builders are Derfel Cadarn, Eero Okkonen, Norton74
What is your favorite LEGO work that you have built so far?
I specialize in large dioramas which keep me busy for several years. My personal triptych is based on The Vampire Castle + The Vampire Hunters' Lair + Paris Steampunk 1889. The next one is called Horrifik Land. Otherwise overall I have nothing to be ashamed of my Lego Ideas projects; they are all original and much better than the BTS set 😁
What has been the most complex challenge you have faced as a LEGO builder?
The most difficult thing for large dioramas is transportation. Since I have been doing exhibitions, I have understood that it is necessary to think carefully about structures and construction methods from the start
There are social network builders with beautiful photos, I am a builder to see at an exhibition
Do you have a favorite technique or a special method that you use in your constructions?
I think I have mastered landscaping techniques: rocks and greenery. I also think I have mastered color harmony
What themes or subjects do you like to explore the most in your creations?
I've done a lot of Steampunk but I don't have too many limits except Lego technic
What is the largest or most ambitious project you have ever made?
The most important project remains Paris Steampunk 1889 with my friend Domino39, (Dominique Damerose), the best builder I know. We work together on Horrifik Land
What advice would you give to someone who wants to become an expert LEGO builder?
You need consistency. Some climb very quickly to the top and come back down very quickly. Take your time, do it at your own pace but stick to your goal. And if one day it works for you, never forget to encourage others. I hate corporatism
