Da dove vieni e cosa hai studiato?
Vengo dalla Finlandia orientale, vicino a Joensuu, ma attualmente vivo a Tampere. Sono un architetto
Cosa fai, che lavoro fai ora?
Sto attualmente svolgendo un dottorato in storia dell'architettura. L'argomento della mia tesi è l'architettura bancaria in stile Art Nouveau della mia città natale, Tampere
Cosa ti ha ispirato a diventare un costruttore LEGO?
Non sono diventato un costruttore LEGO, lo sono sempre stato! Mi sono iscritto ad alcuni forum online quando avevo 12 anni e da allora ho continuato. Ho fatto amicizia con molti di loro grazie a questo hobby
Da dove prendi ispirazione per le tue creazioni?
Da ogni dove! Dai miei studi, dalla storia, dai libri, dall'arte, dalla natura... Traggo ispirazione per i miei personaggi anche semplicemente da persone comuni con uno stile interessante, come quelle che si vedono sui tram, ecc.
Qual'è la tua opera LEGO preferita tra quelle che hai costruito finora?
Ho pubblicato centinaia di modelli negli ultimi 17 anni, quindi è impossibile menzionarne uno in particolare, ma cercherò di menzionarne alcuni di cui sono soddisfatto in questo momento: Pohjola, Gozen, La Via Lattea / Velocità della Luce
Qual'è stata la sfida più complessa che hai affrontato come costruttore LEGO?
La sfida più complessa è come immagazzinare una quantità crescente di componenti e modelli finiti in uno spazio che non aumenta di dimensioni! Ma se lo riduciamo a elementi direttamente correlati all'edilizia, la sommità piramidale del tetto della torre di Pohjola era una di queste: doveva essere completamente sand green, essendo in rame patinato
Hai una tecnica preferita o un metodo speciale che usi nelle tue costruzioni?
Sì, sempre. Ad esempio, ho la formula comune per le articolazioni dei personaggi umani: le caviglie sono ball joints misti, ginocchia e collo sono stud-to-pin-hole joints, fianchi sono T-bar joints normali, spalle sono articolazioni a T, polsi sono clip. I gomiti variano
Quali temi o soggetti ti piace esplorare di più nelle tue creazioni?
Costruisco molti esseri umani, quindi un aspetto importante è il modo in cui le persone si muovono: la postura, le proporzioni, ecc. Mi concentro anche sui colori e sulle loro armonie
Qual'è il progetto più grande o ambizioso che tu abbia mai realizzato?
Il mio modello più grande è la Tampereen Pankki (banca di Tampere), un amalgama di due edifici bancari in stile Art Nouveau che sto studiando nella mia attuale tesi. Il modello è una sezione trasversale con proporzioni, strutture, materiali e spazi relativamente realistici, il che significa che la costruzione è piuttosto densa. Il modello misura 64x96 stud, ovvero 6 moduli, anche se non uso mai basi perché sono scivolose e flessibili
Quale consiglio daresti a chi vuole diventare un esperto costruttore LEGO?
Non serve un'enorme quantità di mattoncini per iniziare. I grandi lotti di pezzi usati sono un buon modo per ampliare una collezione. E ricorda di usare anche colori diversi dal grigio e dal marrone!
Where are you from and what did you study?
I'm from Eastern Finland, near Joensuu, but I currently live in Tampere. I am an architect
What do you do, what job do you do now?
I'm currently doing my doctoral studies on the history of architecture. The subject of my thesis is the Art Nouveau bank architecture of my hometown Tampere
What inspired you to become a LEGO builder?
I did not become a Lego builder, I've always been one! I joined some online forums when I was 12 and I've been continuing since then. I've got many of my friends via this hobby
Where do you get inspiration for your creations?
Everywhere! From my studies, history, books, art, nature... I also get inspiration for my character builds simply from ordinary people with interesting style seen in trams etc.
What is your favorite LEGO work that you have built so far?
I've published hundreds of models during the last 17 years so it's impossible to mention any particular ones, but I'll try to mention some that I'm happy with at this particular moment: Pohjola, Gozen, The Milky Way / Speed of Light
What has been the most complex challenge you have faced as a LEGO builder?
The most complex challenge is how to store an increasing amount of parts and finished models in a space that does not increase in size! But if we crop this to directly building-related the things, the pyramidical cap of the tower roof in Pohjola was one: it had to be completely Sand Green as it's patinated copper
Do you have a favorite technique or a special method that you use in your constructions?
Yes, all the time. For example, I have the common formula for human character joints: Ankles are mixed ball joints, knees and neck are stud-to-pin-hole joints, hips are regular ball joints, shoulders are T-bar joints, wrists are clips. Elbows vary
What themes or subjects do you like to explore the most in your creations?
I build humans a lot, so an important aspect is how people carry themselves - the posture, proportions etc. I'm also focused on colors and their harmonies
What is the largest or most ambitious project you have ever made?
My largest model is Tampereen Pankki (Tampere bank) which is an amalgam of two Art Nouveau bank buildings I'm investigating in my current thesis. The model is a cross section with relatively realistic proportions, structures, materials and spaces, which means the construction is quite dense. The model measures 64x96 studs, aka 6 modules - although I never use baseplates as they're slippery and bendy
What advice would you give to someone who wants to become an expert LEGO builder?
You don't need huge amount of bricks to start with. Big used part lots are a good way to grow a collection. And remember to use other colors than greys and browns, too!
