Da dove vieni e cosa hai studiato?
Sono di origini tedesche, ma attualmente vivo in Australia. Ho studiato Psicologia (laurea triennale) e Scienze Cognitive (laurea magistrale)
Di cosa ti occupi, che lavoro fai?
Attualmente sto cercando di ridefinire me stesso dopo aver conseguito un dottorato di ricerca senza molto successo
Cosa ti ha ispirato a diventare un costruttore LEGO?
Inizialmente, sono stato ispirato a costruire velieri dal blog LEGO ClassicPirates.com e dal relativo Pirate MOC Forum ospitato su Eurobricks.com
Dove trovi ispirazione per le tue creazioni?
Modelli di navi del National Maritime Museum di Greenwich, Londra. Un'ampia collezione di modelli è ospitata sul loro sito web. Ho anche consultato libri come "The Sailing Frigate" di Robert Gardiner
Qual è la tua opera LEGO preferita tra quelle che hai costruito finora?
La fregata corsara Fortuna, ricostruita per la mia partecipazione al BDP6 (attualmente selezionata). Perché? Rispetto alle mie precedenti partecipazioni al BDP, Fortuna presenta ora una silhouette inclinata più dolcemente verso prua e poppa, decorazioni di poppa e di prua più armoniose e una maggiore stabilità. Il meccanismo dell'argano ora funziona in modo più fluido, integrando anche caratteristiche delle mie precedenti creazioni: uno scafo inclinato in mattoncini con cerniere, cannoni a scomparsa individuali e un interno completamente accessibile
Qual è stata la sfida più complessa che hai dovuto affrontare come costruttore LEGO?
Difficile dirlo, ce ne sono state molte. Costruire un ascensore per auto che funzioni davvero è lassù, così come costruire il telaio tecnico per la Fortuna, che integra un argano funzionante con un riduttore di selezione per due avvolgibili per cavi, uno per ciascuna ancora
Hai una tecnica preferita o un metodo speciale che utilizzi nelle tue costruzioni?
Da tempo preferisco lavorare con brackets e headlight bricks perché offrono molta flessibilità e connessioni insolite in spazi ristretti. Ma ora escono così tante nuove parti che cerco costantemente di trovare nuove tecniche. Tuttavia, questi sono ancora ottimi pezzi con cui lavorare.
La mia tecnica preferita al momento è probabilmente quella di creare una differenza di altezza tra le mezze piastre usando diversi mattoncini in SNOT o giocando con brackets inclinati verso l'alto e verso il basso
Quali temi o soggetti ti piace esplorare di più nelle tue creazioni?
Ripensandoci, c'è una forte tendenza verso le auto in scala di miniature e i velieri in scala di miniature-illusion. Ma sto cercando di crescere tecnicamente; ora con un porto medievale e in futuro forse anche con animali o sculture, vedremo
Qual è il progetto più grande o ambizioso che hai mai realizzato?
Il mio contributo al BDP6, con la Fortuna. Ho anche costruito un'intera flotta di velieri (8 imbarcazioni in totale, incluse 4 fregate) nel 2012. Prima di allora, avevo tentato di costruire una singola nave di linea più grande in scala minifigure (sarebbe stata lunga 1,7 m), ma non l'ho mai terminata e ho quindi costruito la flotta di imbarcazioni più piccole
Quale consiglio daresti a chi vuole diventare un esperto costruttore LEGO?
Definisci un problema o una connessione, quindi la risolvi attraverso diverse tecniche e iterazioni per scegliere la soluzione migliore. Questo ti aiuta a imparare e migliorare, anche se richiede tempo e impegno. I mattoncini fisici sono migliori di Stud .io per lo sviluppo delle skills, quindi inizio sempre con quelli e passo a Stud.io in un secondo momento per apportare modifiche, salvare i pezzi e creare le istruzioni
Where are you from and what did you study?
Originally from Germany, now living in Australia. I studied Psychology (BSc) and Cognitive Science (MSc)
What do you do, what job do you do now?
Currently working to redefine myself after unsuccessfully pursuing a PhD
What inspired you to become a LEGO builder?
Initially, I was inspired to build sailing ships by the Lego blog ClassicPirates.com and the associated Pirate MOC Forum hosted on Eurobricks.com
Where do you get inspiration for your creations?
Ship models from the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, London. A large collection of models is hosted on their website. I also consulted books such as The Sailing Frigate by Robert Gardiner
What is your favorite LEGO work that you have built so far?
Privateer Frigate Fortuna as rebuilt for my entry to BDP6. Why? Compared to my earlier BDP entries, Fortuna now features a more gently sloping silhouette towards the bow and stern, more harmonious stern decorations and bow decorations and improved stability. The capstan mechanism now operates more smoothly, while also integrating features from my previous builds: a brick-built, sloping hull with hinges, individually run-out cannons, and a fully accessible interior
What has been the most complex challenge you have faced as a LEGO builder?
Difficult to say, there have been many. Building a car lift that actually works is up there, as is building the technic frame for Fortuna that integrates a working capstan with a selector gearbox for two cable drums, one for each anchor
Do you have a favorite technique or a special method that you use in your constructions?
I have longstanding preference for working with brackets and headlight bricks because they offer much room for flexibility and unusual connections in tight spaces. But now there are so many new parts coming out that I constantly try to find new techniques. However, these are still very good pieces to work with.
My favorite technique right now is probably creating half-plate height difference using different SNOT bricks or by playing with upwards and downwards sloping brackets
What themes or subjects do you like to explore the most in your creations?
Looking back, there's a strong trend towards mini figure-scale cars and mini figure-illusion scale sailing ships. But I am trying to expand; now into a medieval harbor and in the future maybe even into animals or sculptures, we shall see
What is the largest or most ambitious project you have ever made?
My entry to BDP6, Fortuna. I have also build a whole fleet of sailing ships (8 vessels in total, including 4 frigates) in 2012. Before that, I attempted a single bigger ship of the line in full mini figure scale (it would have been 1.7m long), but I never finished it and built the fleet of smaller vessels instead
What advice would you give to someone who wants to become an expert LEGO builder?
Define a problem or connection, then solve it through different techniques and iterations to pick the best solution. This helps you learn and improve, though it takes time and effort.
