Da dove vieni e cosa hai studiato?
Mi chiamo Ralf Langer, sono nato nel 1971 in Germania. Ho studiato informatica
Cosa fai, di cosa ti occupi?
Vivo e lavoro a Colonia come ingegnere di software. Quindi il mio lavoro non ha assolutamente nulla a che fare con il design
Cosa ti ha ispirato a diventare un costruttore LEGO?
Come molti bambini, fin da piccolo ero affascinato dalle possibilità e dalla semplicità del sistema LEGO.
Da allora, LEGO ha introdotto molti colori e pezzi che permettono di realizzare creazioni più adatte agli adulti.
Intorno al 2015 ho visto alcune costruzioni di Luke Watkins Hutchinson e questo mi ha ispirato a riprendere a costruire con i LEGO dopo una pausa di 35 anni
Da dove trai ispirazione per le tue creazioni?
Dalla vita reale, dai fumetti, dai film, ecc. Cerco di non guardare troppo altri costruttori, però, per mantenere le mie creazioni sempre originali
Qual è la tua opera LEGO preferita tra quelle che hai realizzato finora?
È difficile dirlo, a volte dipende dal mio umore del momento :-)
Mi vengono in mente la pesca nelle acque fangose e Billund Parte I (la versione preliminare del modello che ho realizzato per la LEGO HOUSE di Billund)
Qual è stata la sfida più complessa che hai affrontato come costruttore LEGO?
Intendi nella costruzione di un modello specifico o in generale come costruttore LEGO?
In genere, tempo, spazio e denaro. Ordinare e conservare i pezzi è molto più complesso di quanto si immagini!
Hai una tecnica preferita o un metodo particolare che usi nelle tue costruzioni?
Tantissime. Ho pubblicato molti tutorial su tecniche e modelli su Instagram.
Mi affido molto al riutilizzo di queste tecniche e modelli (ad esempio, strutture a graticcio) nei miei modelli
Quali temi o soggetti ti piace esplorare di più nelle tue creazioni?
Direi edifici/architettura, ma non rappresentati in modo tecnico e spesso con un leggero tocco surreale
Qual è il progetto più grande o più ambizioso che tu abbia mai realizzato?
Anche questa è una domanda piuttosto difficile. I più grandi sono stati "Hybris" (il grande tubo spaziale, alto 1,5 metri) e "To the sky", che superava anch'esso il metro di altezza. Potrei facilmente nascondermi dietro quel modello. I più ambiziosi, in realtà, sono stati i miei primissimi: "The Front". Altri molto importanti sono stati "The Space Tube" e anche "Magnum Opus Fachwerkus". Queste costruzioni hanno in comune il fatto che ho sperimentato tantissime tecniche nuove e non mi sono affidato a cose che avevo già fatto in precedenza
Che consiglio daresti a chi vuole diventare un esperto costruttore di LEGO?
Consiglierei, quando si tiene in mano un mattoncino, di ruotarlo e osservarlo da tutte le angolazioni e i lati. A volte il lato inferiore di un mattoncino è davvero prezioso e offre motivi affascinanti. È utile anche uscire dalla solita direzione di costruzione con gli studs in alto. Cambiare direzione di costruzione è fondamentale per costruire con gli studs, come si viene percepiti dagli altri costruttori "esperti". Assicurati inoltre di imparare e comprendere le misure di base. Dai un'occhiata a un sito web che spiega le proporzioni tra le plates e i mattoncini disposti lateralmente
Where are you from and what did you study?
My name is Ralf Langer, I was born 1971 in Germany. I have studied computer science
What do you do, what job do you do now?
I am living and working in Cologne as a software engineer. So my job has absolutely nothing to do with design
What inspired you to become a LEGO builder?
Like many children I was intrigued by the possibilities and ease of the Lego system when I was a child myself.
Since then Lego introduced many colors and parts that allow more adult like stuff.
Around 2015 I saw some builds from Luke Watkins Hutchinson and that inspired me to give Lego building a try again after a pause of 35 years
Where do you get inspiration for your creations?
Real life, comics, movies etc. I try not to look at other builders too much though, to keep my stuff fresh
What is your favorite LEGO work that you have built so far?
That's pretty tough and sometimes it just depends on my current mood :-)
Fishing in muddy waters and Billund Part I (pre version of the model I made for the Lego House in Billund) come to my mind
What has been the most complex challenge you have faced as a LEGO builder?
Do you mean when building a certain model or as a Lego builder in general?
Generally it's time, space and money.
Sorting and storing parts is way more complex than people imagine!
Do you have a favorite technique or a special method that you use in your constructions?
Tons of them. I have posted lots of tutorials for techniques and patterns on Instagram.
I rely heavilyon reusing those techniques and patterns (for example half timbered structures) in my models
What themes or subjects do you like to explore the most in your creations?
I guess that would be buildings/architecture but not depicted in a technical way and often with a slight surreal touch
What is the largest or most ambitious project you have ever made?
Again that's a pretty tough question.
The largest ones were "Hybris" (the big space tube, 1,5 meter in height) or "To the sky" that was also more than 1 meter in height. I could easily hide behind that model. The most ambitious ones were in fact my very first one: "The Front". Other very important ones were "the Space Tube" or also "Magnum Opus Fachwerkus". Those builds have in common that I tried tons of new techniques and didn't rely on stuff that I have done before
What advice would you give to someone who wants to become an expert LEGO builder?
I would suggest when holding a piece, turn it and have a look from all angles and sides. Sometimes the underside of a brick is real gold and offers intriguing patterns. It also helps to break away from the usual building direction with the studs on top. Changing building directions is vital to build stud people perceive as "expert". Also be sure to learn and understand the basic measurements. Check out a website that explains the ratios of plates and sideways bricks
